Like Cool and the Gang sang many years ago- Its too hot.

The rain missed us again.

Yesterday, when I woke up, the forecast was for Widespread showers and thunderstorms- high around 88, with a 70% chance of rain.

By 9 am, they had removed the rain from the updated forecast.

So, now we have went 4 full weeks without any measurable precipitation.

The local lakes are still full. Water supply is not a problem.

Just drag out the hose, let it run all day (except the afternoon-too hot), and get on with life.

One good thunderstorm would do more for the garden than a day of watering with a hose.

Like that will happen anytime soon

Tonight was the annual BBQ and Blues event here in Mohall.

This event brings many of the best rib-cookers and roast-pullers to our civic center parking lot to battle it out for the chance to be named the best rib slinger in the area.

We have been looking forward to this event for some time. Only two things could have made this less than the perfect evening.

1.Rain. (ha!)

2. Unbearable heat.

That, nature provided for us.

It was 95 when we left the house at 6 p.m.

It was 94 when we came home at 7:30 p.m.

That, folks, is too fuckin hot.

We dropped $40 on a bunch of smoked meats and a few bud lights.

The best (IOHO) was made by a pair of sisters who DONT operate a restaurant or rib shack. They entered this year only to show the locals how well they cook their meat .

The ribs were so tender, the meat slipped off the bone with little effort. Their chicken (thigh-leg quarter) was tender and juicy.

We stopped back at their stand to tell them how much we liked their bbq. Thats when we found out that they were not professional cooks. Just a couple of ladies who like to share their fine cooking.

They didnt place in the top two (that was all the prizes they gave, for some reason), which is a crime.

Even more of a crime was the fact that a chain restaurant (Texas Roadhouse) placed second.

Chain-store ribs? They make a decent baby back rib, but there is no person behind the product.

Sorry, but thats how I look at it.

The grand prizewinner was also the peoples choice, too. Big Ds is a local institution, with people lining up for his pulled pork sandwiches and ribs most every evening.

I like another local guy better, but he didnt enter this year. Too busy opening a new outlet, he told Lease (who works with his daughter).

So if he couldnt be the winner, Big Ds is a fine choice

The Anti-Quisp (my friend Zackal) stopped by last night. We finally drank the last of the black cherry beer (that I had been saving for him) that I brewed back in May.

Age only made it smother. I dont know what the alcohol level was for this blend, but it had to be in the higher end of what beer can be, strength-wise.

He left for home around 1 am, after he had sobered up enough to make the short drive to his house. He has spent many a night sleeping on our couch through the years. He wont drink and drive unless he has time to sober up.

He was arriving at the BBQ and Blues fest as we were leaving tonight. I hope he was able to stick around for the bands, because the one playing (as we left) sounded pretty good.

It was just too much heat and humidity for us. When your shirt is sticking to your skin (because it is soaking wet), its time to head for the air conditioning.

My DrugDealingNeighbors arrest made the paper today.

He is being charged with attempted murder, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and fleeing the scene of an accident (his running over the man he shot at counts as an accident, I guess). The article said that the disagreement was due to the arrested mans claim that the victim had started a relationship with his wife.

Thats how the local paper put it, anyway.

Gee, and to think I thought it was drug-related!

He is being held on $500,000 bail.

Damn.

I guess the cost of cutting down the Evil Black Walnut Tree will be mine alone now
