Shaws Garden-its not the botanical kind of garden, btw.

Shaws Garden is a nice local place to enjoy a dinner. Its at the home of Ray Shaw, a long-time Mohall resident and restaurateur. He owns a regular restaurant in town, and he is also Mohalls largest caterer.

When you know this mans background, you have to call him a great American success story. As a young man, he started out as a busboy and general kitchen helper for the most Fancy hotel in town. His employers saw that he had the drive and ambition to become something more, and sent him to Chicago (I think) so he could train as a chef. He returned to Mohall a few years later, and he became the head chef for the Fancy hotel. He held that position for about 20 years, and gained a reputation as one of the finest chefs in all of North Dakota.

When the Fancy hotel was converted to senior assisted living in the early 1980s, Ray decided to open his own restaurant. That restaurant has thrived ever since then, and he has customers who eat there several nights a week. He bought the property where he has his Garden a few years ago (it also contains his private home, horse barns, and a nice pond), and converted some of the extra acreage into the outdoor reception area he now uses for wedding receptions, private parties, and now for the Friday night outdoor buffet.

He is getting up there in years, but he still is very involved in how his food is created and served. He has been fighting some illness the past year or so, so he almost didnt get a both in this summers Mohall Celebration. He seems to be doing better, and he always makes a point of stopping by your table, making sure everything is to your liking.

His food is a mix of southern, French, and soul food. His fried chicken is one of his specialties: not to salty, never greasy, and always very moist. He also makes great bbq. Tonight, he was serving it as pork sandwiches, but at his restaurant it is presented in the form of tender ribs. Tonight he was also offering fried catfish filets, cole slaw, pasta salad, rolls, and several choices of desert.

The inter cost of our meal, drinks included? Around $10 each, tax included.

People that live around Mohall always like to complain that there are no good places to eat here.

They need to stay away from the overpriced T.G.Shannaigans kinda joints, and spend a little of their money at our great locally-own places.

That last paragraph probably sounds like an article from the Style section of your local newspaper.

Oh well.

Nothing much happened at work today, so I just thought I would tell yall how much me enjoy this mans handiwork.

Plus, its Friday night. Not many people will be reading this, anyway.

One last thing:

MOM told us today that she is still retiring, but is now planning on sticking around until after snow season is over. She was originally planning on leaving early in October.

Now, she will be leaving in April of 2003.

That set off a mass gloom and doom reaction around the storage today. Almost everybody had started the countdown until she left.

Now they are all acting like kids who found out that Christmas morning has been moved up by 4 months.

Its not going to be pretty out there, Im telling you
