Another false alarm, and yet another day alone

The latest, greatest big snow event fizzled out last night.

Instead, we were subjected to freezing rain. Heavy rain, which slowed down the formation of ice on the roadway, but freezing rain none the less.

I had given up on even getting called in, and was lying in bed , trying to sleep, when the phone finally rang last night. It was 11 pm. The temperature outside was still 40.

Why did they call us in? Because the next county north of us was only 28, and the cold air was headed south.

By the time I reached my route, the temperature was down to 35. It took until 1 am for the freezing point to be reached. From that time until 5 am, rain fell as fast as the air temperature. I went through 3 loads of salt in that time frame, keeping the lanes free of ice. The turn lanes were another story. They were all completely glazed over, but I didnt have time to mess with them. Keeping the lanes melted was priority #1.

At 5 am, snow started falling. This snow quickly turned my wet pavement to slush, and then to packed ice/snow.

It looked like we had done nothing all night, according to the other lead worker. He came in this morning and asked Gordo if that was the case. Gordo told him yeah, we spent the night sitting in Steak and Shake, drinking coffee. Mikey wouldnt know what we did, because he hasnt had to fight a decent freezing rain in the time he has worked at NDDOT (2+ years).

Sarcasm like this isnt appreciated after a long night without sleep. The atmosphere in the office is becoming more and more uncomfortable. Beavis continues to stick it to Gordo every chance he gets. Last night, Beavis called our crew in, instead of having Gordo run the routes and make the call himself. Its within Beavs right to do this, but he only does it to our crew. The other shift is about 40 hours ahead of mine, and the other lead worker is 55+ hours ahead of Gordo. Just another way for the little weirdo to play Napoleon. If there has ever been a case example of little man syndrome better than our Beav, I would like to see it.

Today is March 5th. I am only on call for another 26 days this winter. I think I have had to work in a winter-weather related situation maybe twice in 20+ winters after call ended.

So its not likely I will have to put up with Beavis childish behavior (call-out wise) much longer. After April 1st, several new people will be eligible to be temporary lead workers, and to be considered for the full time position when they finally fill it.

Beavis will want to keep Mikey in there, because he plays along with his mind games.

Nobody else on our payroll will.

Like I said they might (back in December), things have become interesting since MOM retired.

It has become exactly what I feared it would in the office- just like a grade school playground jungle gym at recess. Who will get to the top, knocking all the others down below him?

Stay tuned

I came home this morning at 7:30. Lease had to go to work at 7.

Last night, she didnt get home until 8 pm. Tonight , she thinks it will be more like 9pm..This should be her last Hell week at work for some time. They switched over the rest of Mohalls cable boxes to the new settings late Monday night. Even though they send out 2 different mailings explaining that this will happen, and explaining where each channel has moved to on the dial (remember dials on TVs? They havent had those for 20 years now), people still call and complain.

If she gets off at 9, she will come home, bathe, and go to bed.

This is getting old. I miss my tiem with Lease. I dont want her working so many hours, but they dont give her any option. The overtime is required, even if they say otherwise.

So we live our days, coming and going without even seeing much of each other. The snow is cleared, so we will at least sleep in our bed at the same time tonight.

I dont want to sound like a broken record, but - Spring cant get here soon enough.
