Saturday, Apr. 12, 2003 - 8:13 p.m.

Another Saturday, another long day at the ball diamond (but it ended nicely ;).

Yes, baseball is our life this time of year.

I think you already know that.

Since today was the Saturday when ACT college testing was conducted at Mac, the games were not scheduled to start until 1:30.

That was good, because it gave us time to run to Wallyworld to procure our needed supplies.

It was bad, because it meant we would be at the ballpark until at least 6pm, effectively killing the rest of the productive part of our Saturday.

Add to that the fact that we knew Codeman wouldnt be playing in game 1 (but couldnt skip said game, in the unlikely occurrence that he would pinch hit and put the ball over the fence), and it made for a long afternoon.

Here is a summary:

Game one was a disaster. Mac lost to Jackonville 9-2. The coachs pets (the sophomores) started the game, and made 5 errors between them. When you consider the fact that one of the three played with the JV today, that is hilarious.

The coach also got into a shouting match from the dugout with his prize junior. The boy (definitely not mature enough to call a young man) had booted about the third ground ball hit to him, and then threw his glove to the ground. I think I broke Codeman of that when he was about 9 years old.

Coach told him that he would pull him from the lineup if he did it again, and that he better shape up. This impressed the junior so much that he yelled back something smart-assed (but unheard from our location) at the coach. Coach yelled back I am in charge of this team! You dont tell me what to do! I will stick you butt on the bench!

He didnt , of course. The player is just too good or too important to the team to bench.

I am in charge of this team!

Sure you are..

Game two found Codeman batting as the designated hitter in the 9th spot in the order. He said he felt sick today, so he didnt mind not playing in the field.

First time up, he struck out on a called third strike. He had been given the take sign by the coach, because the count was 0 balls, 2 strikes.

Second time up, runners on 1st and 2nd. With the count 2-1 on the boy, he took a long time looking down at the coach for his signal. He stepped back into the box, and on the next pitch surprised everyone by turning towards the pitcher and laying down a great bunt. He moved the runners to second and third, almost beating the throw to first in the process. The next batter then knocked the two base runners home on an infield hit that ended up as an overthrow to first base.

If you look real close, you can see the ball dropping right in front of the bat.

Coach even told Codeman Great job, baby! when he returned to the bench. Codeman had to run behind the field after the out (since Mac was in the third base dugout), and slapped me on the back as he ran by. He was grinning from ear to ear, and said Didnt think I could bunt, did you?

No, I didnt.

Third time up, he hit a line drive to deep center, but it was caught by the outfielder for an hard out.

His last at bat?

Runners on 1st and 2nd again, two outs. Score Mac 11, Jack 3.

Codeman fell behind 0-2, and then fouled off about 5 pitches. He worked the count to 3-2, and then settled in for the next pitch:

He then lined the ball on one hop to the left field fence, clearing the bases for a double. When the umpire told him that the game was over (10 run rule), he hopped off of second base:

I have to say, this might have been the best game he has had at the plate, playing for the varsity team. I know he had more hits in a game a couple of times last year, but today he just did what was needed, and could have gone 3-3 if he had straightened out a couple of the foul balls he hit before making outs today (optimistic dad writing here).

Our friend Zackal even stopped by long enough to see Codemans last two at bats, and my Dad and step-mom were there for the whole game.

It doesnt get much better that that..

Oh yeah, one more thing - I am sunburnt like a boiled lobster.

I will be paying for the lack of sunscreen for the next week or so..
