A great game for Codeman (even if the game stunk)plus, a recipe that I dont plan on cooking anytime soon

First off I received the following in an email this afternoon:

Congratulations! Roadiepig at http://roadiepig.diaryland.com has been

nominated for a Diarist Award in the

- Best Journal (Overall) category

Um, ok.

Is someone out there messing with my mind? I can only imagine what the judges will think when the read my tortured use of the English language.

Thanks, for whomever nominated me.

I just hope, after reading a few of my entries, they dont ask me to please stop writing.

Codemans team had another ugly loss tonight.

I saw this one coming when I saw the schedule this February. This team (which will remain nameless here, mainly because I couldnt think of anything normal about them to make fun of) ended up in second place behind Mac last spring, after dropping two one-run games to that group of talented players.

Im sure their coach has looked forward to whacking us over the head all winter. They went mush deeper into the state playoffs last year, but lost the league title for only the first time in 3 years because of those losses to our team.

They visitors had 5 hits in the first inning, and had 8 runs after two innings.

Ugly.

By the time the game entered the 5th inning, the score was 12-1. If we didnt score at least two runs in the bottom of the inning (and hold them scoreless in the top of the 5th, too), the game would be over. Mercy rule, dont you know?

For that reason, our coach threw a bone to a couple of the non-starters, putting them into the game for an inning in the field and maybe an at-bat in the bottom of the frame.

Codeman was one of the recipients of the tossed bones. He took the field at 1st base.

That is only the second time he has fielded that spot on the diamond in the past 2 years. Considering that was has main position from the age of 6, up until he entered his sophomore year of high school, you couldnt blame him if he was a little rusty.

In the top of the 5th, Codeman was on the receiving end of all three putouts. One throw pulled him off of the bag and into foul territory. He recovered quickly enough to turn and tag the hitter as he reached the bag.

Not bad for not expecting to ever play there again.

In the bottom of the inning, we had a base runner with one out. The junior class coachs pet managed to pull a line drive over the left field fence. That made the score 12-3.

It also meant we would get one more inning in the field. Codeman would even get an at-bat, as he was due up third in the bottom of the 6th.

Somehow, we managed to keep them off of the scoreboard in the top of the 6th. They left runners on 1st and 2nd base when the last batter grounded out weekly to the second baseman, who tossed the ball to first. That meant Codeman had 4 put outs in 2 innings.

The third baseman did throw a ball about 2 over his head, but even our starting 1st baseman wouldnt have reached that one. He is 67 tall, too.

The third baseman has been in a throwing slump for a few games now. If the play at third is a routine ground ball, he takes too much time, thinks about what he is doing, and then throws the ball who-knows-where.

Anyway..

Bottom of the 6th, two men out. Codeman comes to the plate.

He takes two balls, and then a called strike. On the 2-1 pitch, he connected for a gapper that two-hopped to the left field fence. He had a stand-up double!

He ended up stranded there. That has been his luck this year. Nobody on, late in a game, and he hits a ball to the fence. He has 4 hits this spring (in limited duty- which you all know by now), but three of the hits were balls that hit the outfield fence.

He might clear the fence before the season ends

Back to the game

Top of the 7th, and the other team didnt get their 10-run win they wanted so bad. They managed to get the leadoff runner on base, and he scored on a fielders choice.

In between, Codeman made two more putouts at first. Both were on wild throws, and both were after he left the bag for the throw and recovered enough to put a tag on the runner.

Like I said- for only getting tossed in the game in a blowout, he had a great game. Three innings in the field, no mistakes and three good plays on bad throws. One at-bat, one double.

Oh yeah Mac didnt score in the bottom of the 7th, so the other team did end up with their ten-run rule win. It just took them another 45 minutes and 2 more innings to get it, thats all

We are under a frost advisory tonight.

Peachy!

As in, I hope the frost doesnt kill my peaches.

I had to drag in a flat of tender annual flowers, and my three hanging baskets, too.

That took all of 5 minutes.

I bet I pass a few houses tomorrow morning where people have draped blankets and plastic sheeting over their tender plants.

I dont have anything in the ground that will die if it does frost. I just dont rush the seasons anymore.

I do have three full flats of tomato plants, two full of peppers, and a couple more with various other flowers and veggies, all waiting for the day when frosts are past.

Considering that was May 21st last year, they have some time to go yet (I will put them in earlier than that, of course. That was the latest last frost I have seen in 30+ years of gardening here in Mohall ;)

(Um, the following is actually sarcasm, not a recommendation that you try to make this dish. Thank you for your sense of humor.)

One last thing:

A recipe for you to try.

But only if you enjoy crunchy insects in your diet ( Im thinking fans of Fear Factor hear, I guess)

You cook and eat this dish, and I will give you a thumbs up.
