Friday, May. 16, 2003 - 10:17 p.m.

Another busy day, a quick update (I promise!)

Slept late (9 am- yes!).

Drove the Hillbilly boat to the Nuclear Power Plant Lake.

Didnt catch squat in all of the places we did on Tuesday.

Water about 1 foot higher than it was then, and the color of coffee with double cream.

Not good for fishing, but.

After striking out for about 2 hours, we decided to try a cove on the calm side of the basin we were in.

We ended up catching 45 (yes, exactly 45- Lease likes to keep count) nice pre-spawn bluegills. Most were large (and I mean really large for this lake) males, fighting each other over prime shoreline locations to build their nests. That is partially how we found them- splashing and flopping on the surface in less than 1 foot of water (I tried to find a link to a photo of bluegill spawning beds, but came up dry. Might have to shoot one myself, later this month, if I am lucky enough to find them?). The females we caught were about 5 feet or so from the shoreline, and were bursting with eggs.

No, we didnt keep any. Could have- as many as 30 were keepers.

But catching them was good enough for us.

We also caught one small walleye, and only one crappie (the spawn for them might be over).

Around 4 pm, we drove home. Because time was short, we left the Hillbilly boat hooked up to the Hillbilly truck, and did a 15-minute clean-up (to remove the fishy smell from our persons). Drove south to the elevator town below us on the map (10 minutes away), and arrived in time to watch the end of the Junior varsity game (won by Mac 5-4).

This was a make-up game for a rain out from back in early April. I dont think anyone on our team really cared if we made this game up (think of the New York Yankees playing a semi-pro team from Albany- that is the difference in talent between a tiny town and a large high school no matter how bad our record is right now).

The coach of the other team had an opening for tonight, and bugged our coach to play this game.

I imagine he wish he hadnt right now.

With the score knotted at 0-0 in the top of the third inning, Codeman (who started this game SHOCK!- as the designated hitter) lead off the inning at the plate.

He lined a 2-2 pitch into left field for a single:

Yes, the photo is a little blurred. The game started at twilight, and by the time he stepped to the plate it was under the lights. Not a bad exposure, considering the circumstances

I only brought the camera to the game to take a few photos of a co-workers nephew (starting first baseman for the elevator towns team), BTW.

I am glad I had the camera pointed at the boy for his hit, though

He ended up going 1-3. He struck out his second at-bat, but fouled off 3 pitches with the count 0-2, so I told him he did as good as he could.

His last at bat?

He hit a screaming line drive. Unfortunately, it was right at the shortstop. The runner on third base strayed too far, and was out to complete a double play.

Yes, Codeman was upset about his performance.

I told him that is why the defense gets 9 players in the field. If his last hit ball had gone 1 foot either direction? He would have had a single with (likely) two more runs batted in.

Thats baseball. It is called The game of inches for a reason.

Mac won 10-0 in 5 innings. The game was over in just over one hour.

Good for them, and good for us.

Tomorrow is Senior Day. First game starts at 10 am. Since tonights game started at 7 pm, we wanted a quick kill to get a little rest before tomorrows doubleheader.

Thanks to our teams hot bats, we got it
