Lightning can do some strange things

Had our second round of major thunderstorms in the past 4 days overnight.

I woke up around 3 am, mainly due to the intense lightning flashing nearly non-stop. This started well before the storm was lashing out at us, because you could hardly hear the thunder. Once it reached Mohall, it let loose with strong winds and very frequent lightning.

One bolt was heard as it was seen. That is too close for any chance to sleep. Even Sproutman woke up, and he is nearly deaf and blind in his old age. The direct strike caused him to pace the floor, and he wouldnt lay back down on his bed. I had to toss him on the bed next to me (something I try to never do), where he sat shaking for another few minutes before he calmed back down.

Not much sleep last night..

When I drove to work this morning, I saw what the close strike had hit:

This WAS a 30 foot tall sugar maple tree. It was located in the front lawn of the fourth house to our east here on our street.

The lightning must have hit it direct and center, because the tree was split evenly in 4 similarly sized chunks. It is now just an 8 foot tall trunk, not a tree.

The neighbors behind us were cleaning up several major sections of their maple trees after work tonight, so the direct hit could have been on their tree, too.

Dont know.

Just one question.why , whenever this kind of strong storms happens around here, doesnt one (just one!) of these bolts topple the Evil Black Walnut Tree From Hell!?
