Photos from last night, todays battlefield report, and an explanation for the "blackout".

(Hey guess what? I started this 'journal' 2 years ago today! And I am still here, writing with the same bad command of the English language I possesed back then! Read all the way to the end of today's entry, and see what I had to do to this 'journal' today that takes some of the fun out of writing here.)

And now- on to the "regular" entry....

J-Rod and I caught quite a few fish last night.

Unfortunately for us, most of them were bluegill. Small ones at that.

The White bass didnt come to the shallow water until very late. We managed to land 27 between us. Fun, but the action wasnt nearly as fast and furious as the last few trips to the same spot.

I have a few photos of the evening to share here. The first one is of J-Rod with the first crappie he has caught in his life:

It wasnt large enough to keep, but, then again, we werent keeping anything anyway.

The next shot is of one of the many Bluegills that decided to hit one of our spinner baits:

Like I said last week- I have never caught this many gills on spinners before in my life. It make sense that this method is working, though. There are so many tiny fish (baby minnows, gizzard shad, or even baby game fish? I dont know.) in the shallows, it follows that the other fish would be hanging around beneath them, waiting for an opportunity to eat a few. When we retrieve the spinner, we keep it moving fast enough to keep the turning blade about 1 foot below the surface. To a larger fish, this means an injured baitfish in their area.

On many retrieves, the Bluegills will hit the spinner 4 or 5 times without being hooked. Fast action, and easy enough for an amateur to catch quite a few, too..

Last shot is of some idiot, wading out to where the fish were feeding:

When the Whites finally started breaking the surface, they were too far out to reach with our best casts. Wading towards them was our only option.

The water was warm, the bottom of the lake was mostly sand. Somehow, we managed to avoid stepping on a broken bottle or a lost hook.

All in all, a pretty nice way to spend a summer evening

Today was a good day for the opposition.

The tree rats, that is.

The trap didnt trip. The ear of corn with peanut butter was removed. I guess the trip has to be set totally hair trigger, or it doesnt work at all.

Peaches lost? Another 16 ruined fruit lie on the ground when I returned home from work.

I reset the trap, with a few alterations. I wrapped a small piece of wire around the cob, securing the ear to the bottom of the cage. I also made damn sure that the trip mechanism was ready to go with the slightest touch on the trip plate.

It worked.

Less than 10 minutes later, I noticed the door was down from the kitchen window. Something was moving around inside of the trap.

It was a squirrel all right. But the wrong kind- it was a small ground squirrel, or chipmunk as most people call them.

I let him out right there- these little rodents dont do any harm to the garden, and dont climb the trees anyway. I like watching them scurry around in the yard, and occasionally see one run across the patio while I am sitting outside, cooking supper on the grill.

They can stay.

Nothing else has ventured inside the trap this evening, so I guess you have to give todays battle to the tree rats.

Battle lost, but the war will be won.

An explanation on the blackout:

I blacked out my guestbook today. I also removed my link to my email and to the d-land notes page.

Why?

Nothing anyone who actually reads this crap did has caused me to do this. I really enjoy hearing back from y'all.

No, this has been caused by the usual Internet-ruining suspects- Spammers from Hell.

I have been averaging around 5 spam/g-book entries a day for porn sites. Not good porn (yes, I think there is good porn. So shoot me).

Vile, perverted porn. Involving blood, urine, and other sick things.

I check each link left with a g-book entry, and what has been multiplied like bunnies there lately is enough to make my stomach turn.

Whoever these people are, they have also started send the same crap to my email account. I have never had any problem with spam filling my email box, mainly because I am very careful how I use my real email account. I have several free email accounts for any site I feel might sell my addy down the road to some porn or advertisement producer. I want my real email to come form only people and places I trust, and to not have to wade through penis enlargement, Nigerian prince needs your help, and refinance your mortgage emails every day.

For now, this is just the way it has to be. Sorry if you actually want to comment on something I write, but I am just tired of this garbage.

If the postings stop, I might give it a try again.

But for now, I won't have the usual ways for anyone in D-land to reach me.
