Monday, Oct. 06, 2003 - 8:01 p.m.

Short update on several small and large recent items (and alcohol-free, for the first time in the last 3 nights, too ;)

You would find it hard to stay sober, waiting to see if the Chicago Cubs could end 95 years of failure.

Not shit-faced drunk, mind you- just enough mixed drinks (vodka lemonade) to take the edge off.

Anyway.what does that have to do with the price of tea in China anyway?

Lease and I ate at our favorite Mongolian restaurant tonight. The place was a ghost town. I dont know it was because today is Monday, or because the grocery store next door is being remodeled after selling to a new mega-corporation (Kroger) and is shut down, or if business is just bad due to the slumping local economy.

Whatever the reason, I hope they dont go out of business. The food is that good, and is as authentic as anything you can buy here in Mohall.

Anyway.

I thought I would pass the fortune from one of our cookies tonight. See if this rings any bells for you:

Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation

Yes, I did say that was inside of a fortune cookie. The spelling and grammar was even correct.

I knew it sounded familiar, so I used Google to find out who wrote it originally:

Oscar Wilde.

In a fortune cookie?

I guess the company gave up trying to translate the original Chinese sayings into English

Dunny showed up for work today.

He is the worker who was fired last month. Properly fired. For being a hazard to man and beast.

(I wrote about his mistakenly being brought back with the wrongly fired employees on Friday, if you missed it)

He walked into the storage like nothing had happened. And he walked up to Mov and myself (we were talking about last nights ballgame), and put his two cents worth into the discussion. I acknowledged his presence. Thats about it. I want to be very careful not to say anything that he will be able to use in any future lawsuit he might file against the NDDOT.

He went into the lead workers room at starting time. Mikey is Mohall1 this month. Dunny blames Mikey for much of his problems at work. Not the fact that he is dangerous and unable to do the job- no, its all Mikeys fault.

Mikey told him (politely) that our engineer was on his way over, and wanted him to wait in the breakroom for his arrival.

He did.

He sat in the dark room until morning break, 2 hours later. He never moved a muscle, never even read a magazine or anything.

Strange dude, like I have said before.

When the guys in the storage came in for morning break, he left the room and sat inside of his personal pickup truck for the 15 minute rest period. When we left, he went back into the breakroom.

And he sat there, in the dark, until the Doughnut man showed up one hour later.

Doughnut told him that he had to get a status slip from his doctor, saying he was able to return to work. Seems he told the folks in London that he had hurt his back the day before he was fired. Not wanting to take any chances, they informed him he had to have clearance to return to work.

He left at 10:30. We leave work for the day at 4 pm.

He never came back into the building.

He doesnt want to be there at all. Not just because he was fired: most people think he just wants a settlement from the accident he was involved in last November, and then a big lawsuit for being improperly fired. Improperly, in his warped mind, that is.

No, the only reason why he is back is due to the incompetence of some paper shuffler in Bismarck. He just rode the tide back in with the guys who were politically fired a couple of weeks back (we found out recently that a few of the 6-month probationary workers WERENT fired at the same time the others were. Those workers were all party workers for our Governor Little Big Mans party, by chance. They were spared the ax, but, of course, IT WASNT POLITICALLY MOTIVATED AT ALL, according to the NDDOT Spokeswoman).

So, for the time being we are stuck trying to survive around this guy. Hopefully, he wont be around to run a snowplow through the front grill of a school bus during the first snowfall.

No, I dont worry about him going postal.

He weighs about 350 pounds. He moves far to slowly to take many people out, even if he brought a machine gun with him.

Well, he might get a few with his first shots.

But I am confident the rest of the guys could escape by walking in an orderly fashion to the nearest exit.

I really need to stop dwelling about this government fuckup. I really do.

But it just boils my blood that the taxpayers of North Dakota will be stuck paying this man a large sum of money, one way or the other.

And its all because some paper pusher didnt bother reading his termination papers
