In a bummer mood, due to death and crummy weather.

WARNING! VIOLENT SUBJECT MATTER AHEAD! DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!

Had a traffic fatality today in our county. On my route, but not due to anything I (or any other NDDOT employee) did.

The day started out with a heavy fog warning, and with good reason. The air temperature was a balmy (weather people always use the word balmy for warm conditions this time of year) 60 at daybreak. With the lack of any breeze at all, this caused the visibility to be less than a quarter mile.

The accident happened a mile south of the county line, at the first crossroad south of the big curve leading out of Sherwood. A woman driving eastbound didnt see the stop sign at the intersection with state route 28 (a 65 mph speed limit zone), drove into the path of a southbound , fully loaded semi tractor trailer. The semi drove over the drivers side of the vehicle, killing the driver instantly.

Our storage was called by the county sheriffs department for traffic control. We set up two TMAs, and sent our backhoe up to scrape mud off of the road.

The coroner spent several hours cleaning up her remains from the pavement. My coworkers said it was amazing to watch him, calmly picking up tiny pieces of tissue and placing them inside of individual Ziploc bags.

Once he was finished, he asked our workers to pick up the remaining pieces of broken plastic and metal from the car still blocking traffic on the road. One of our guys was filling a bucket with scraps when he picked up something that at first looked like fiberglass to him. He quickly realized that it was bone, skin, and hair.

This guy served in the first Persian Gulf War and witnessed all kinds of carnage, and it still freaked him out. The coroner heard the worker curse, calmly walked over to where he was standing and deposited the remains into another bag. He also apologized for missing it, too.

This was one of those days where I am very happy to be stuck in the storage, manning the telephones and such.

If the first part of this entry made you sick to your stomach.I apologize.

Just thought I would let you know about the fun and games that we NDDOT highway employees deal with on a regular basis..

The weather forecast for the weekend has changed several times since I woke up this morning.

First, it was rain tomorrow, then maybe a little snow on Sunday.

Several revisions later, it calls for sleet and freezing rain starting tomorrow afternoon, continuing overnight and into mid day Sunday before changing to wet snow.

I hate freezing rain.

Another 8-10 years of this, and then retirement.

By the time I wake up tomorrow, they will probably be calling for thunderstorms with highs in the mid 60s.

Such is life in North Dakota in January
