More photos from the weekendplus- a link to the official map of Springfield, the hometown of Homer Simpson.

Good thing that we went down to watch the races on Saturday.

Sunday was race-free due to the constant thunderstorm/tornado watches/warnings. Nothing serious happened, but combined with high winds, the promoters of these races thought they would rather take their chances with todays (Monday) weather.

A shot taken just before dark last night. I havent adjusted the colors one single bit. Anytime I see a sky this color, I figure it might be time to hit the storm cellar (basement, in other words):

Luckily for us, it wasnt the second coming of straight-line winds this week. Just a little rain, and thats about it.

I had to gather up all of the newly fallen limbs from the E.B.W.T.from H.! today. Now I have 2 pickup loads full to haul out of here.

Anyway..

Waiting for today ended up being a bad choice for the race organizers.

When we woke up this morning, it was because the winds were howling so hard the windows were shaking. Unusual for a non-blizzard day here in Mohall.

Codeman really loves the boat races, so Lease and I threw ourselves together and headed down with him with the hope that some races would happen.

He did get to see the only championship heat. This involved the Jersey skiffs, a type of boat that doesnt have to worry about flipping over in high winds. Here is a shot showing these boats in action on Saturday:

These are not our favorite boats. They dont go all that fast, and with two occupants, they are more like weekend boaters than race boats. But high winds dont stop them from racing, which is something the hydroplane boats cant do.

I think the real reason why there are two people in each boat is so that there is one person free to flip off the drivers of the boat next to them. They say the extra rider is there for some sort of steering, but we dont believe it for a minute. Making obscene gestures to the other boats seems to be what most of these co-pilots do, anyway

I still have around 150 photos to edit, so I will leave you with this last shot from today:

This shot sums up the weekend for many of the racers. The two guys standing on the deck of their boat were forlornly looking out at the mounting whitecaps on Lake Mohall, hoping for the wind to die back.

It never did. Not until about an hour ago anyway, which was too late for these racers. They put away their tools and such and headed out of the pits (and towards home, wherever that is) about the same time the Roadiepig family also gave up and headed home ourselves (about 3 pm).

This seems to happen more years than not. Having this event on Memorial Day weekend is always a risk: the weather is just too unsettled this time of year.

Last year, we had three great days. No postponed races. Everything was run on time, and everyone (racers and fans alike) went home happy.

This year is more typical: one day of racing, two days of frustration.

Oh well- at least we avoided tornados and strong storms this time around.

Ill leave you with a link I received in my email today:

The official map of Springfield, home of the Simpsons.

Pretty well detailed, for those of you who love this show as much as I do.

Check out how many Crusty Burgers outlets there are on this map.

My favorite store name?

Bloodbath and Beyond, the local gun store (and a play on the whole Bed, Bath and Beyond chain).

After 13+ seasons of this great show, you need a map to keep track of all of the locations that have been presented in various episodes.

If you dont like The Simpsons, just skip this link. You probably wont get the inside jokes anyway.
