Not a good trip for Codeman- and maybe not one for us now, too.

Codeman came home from work yesterday with an interesting story.

Seems he was carrying 2 40 pound bags of dog food down the stairs at work when his left foot landed on a full bottle of shampoo.

Why was a full bottle of shampoo doing on the stairway?

Not sure.

Not a great place to put it, though.

He thinks that the other person who was carrying food down the stairs might have dislodged it from the storage rack near the bottom of the steps (there are only 5 steps to the storeroom anyway) without knowing it.

Anyway

He called me to tell me the news, and said he though he had just badly sprained said ankle.

By the time he came home, it had swollen up so much it looked like he had a golf ball under the skin. He called around to several people for advice, and decided to go to the emergency room for an x-ray. The Lovely Chelsea offered to take him there, and since he is technically an adult (19+ years old, after all), we stayed home.

They left about 7 pm.

Chelsea called me at 9:30 (after I left a message on her phone earlier, wondering what was taking so long) with the news that he had a broken bone in his foot!

I threw my clothes on and met him in the e.r. By then, they were just waiting on a nurse to stop by to splint him for the night. We left with instructions to go to a orthopedics specialist first thing this morning.

We were in his office by 8 am, and didnt see the doctor until almost noon. Such is life

He spoke to Codeman for about 3 minutes. He had reviewed his x-rays , and determined that he had the following damage:

Torn ligament on the outside of his left ankle, ligament pulled away from tibia with a small piece of bone attached to it.

Makes me cringe just typing that information.

Instead of a cast, Codeman gets to make the following fashion statement:

He swears that he isnt feeling any pain in his ankle, even though all he is taking in generic ibuprofen (doctors order). I hope he is telling me the truth..

When I arrived at the E.R. last night, I entered the lobby at the same time as a trio of gangbangers. They pulled up to the door in their gangbangermobile, and two of the nice young men basically drug the third out of the backseat and into the building. He was obviously in some major pain (aw- poor drug dealing baby!), so the guards put him in a wheelchair.

Since everyone there was preoccupied with this drama, I just stood and waited until someone noticed me standing at the desk.

I dont think anyone could have mistaken me for one of their posse.

Anyway

The guard asked him what was wrong, and he just pointed down at his leg. Once his shiny jogging suits pant leg was pulled back, I could see what was ailing him:

Someone had popped a cap into his aser, calf.

Pretty big hole, too. Probably at least a 9 mm, if not a .45 caliber bullet.

Such is the chance you take, making your living outside of the law.

Vacation is kinda on hold, as I type this.

Codeman says he will be fine. Chelsea (along with my sister, dad, and a whole slew of folks on Leases side of the family) will be here to help him if he needs anything.

He is going to try to go to college tomorrow, and his boss is adjusting his workload so that he can just do deskwork while he heals.

We wont decide for sure if we are going until late Sunday.

He may be all grown up, but if he cant get around good enough, we wont head 1000+ miles out of town.
