Close, but no cookie

Am I upset that they didnt win the game last night (the Illini, that is)?

No.

North Carolina had better players. Just like every commentator said, all season. ( Note to N.C. coach Williams- stop complaining about how everyone keeps reminding you about all the talent you had. Your post game comments about How well we played as a team, even if nobody gives us credit comes across as self-aggrandizing. You HAVE the best talent. All those comments make you seem that you want more credit for yourself for what they did on the court. Its unbecoming of a victorious coach.).

After falling behind by 15 early in the second half, the good guys pulled themselves up off of the floor and showed the grit they displayed all year, fighting their way back to tie the score at around 4 minutes to go, and again at the 2:31 mark. From that point on, they worked the ball around to get 4 open shots at the basket (all 3 pointers), but missed each and every one.

Final score North Carolina 75, Illinois 70.

Oh yeah- I almost forgot: The coach of North Carolina praised his team for the defense they played down the stretch.

The shooters for the Illini werent defended as much as they just missed the open looks. After playing at full speed all second half just to catch back up, I think their legs were just gone. Without your legs, a 20 foot jump shot doesnt stand much of a chance.

So

I wont dwell on the final game of this season. I would rather remember what this team accomplished over the past 5 months.

They tied the record for most wins by a division 1 mens basketball team in one season (37). Funny thing- the other two teams who won 37 games (Nevada-Las Vegas in the 80s and a Duke team in the late 90s) also lost in the championship game.

They were 5.1 seconds from having a perfect regular season (until Matt Sylvester sunk his long 3 pointer for Ohio State back in March).

They rolled through the Big Ten Tourney.

The came from 15 points down (just like last night) against Arizona in their elite 8 game. 15 down with a little over 4 minutes left in the game! And they WON! I have two VHS copies of this game on tape. I imagine I will watch it a few more times before I die.

And they made it to the schools first ever National Championship game.

Ive enjoyed almost every minute of it. And I didnt go to bed upset about the outcome of a single game. Until last night, that is. I had to function at work today with about 4 hours of restless sleep.

All in all, its been a great run. They set their sights on playing for the championship back in October, and they found a way to get there. Even had a chance to sneak out of there with a win, as bad as they shot all night.

And they didnt have to get their former coach fired just to get there, too
