Monday, Sept. 05, 2005 - 8:03 p.m.

Three days without stress...

Saturday- walked (yes, walked) to Codemans college to watch the home team play a small school from Iowa play football.

Wasnt even close (even thought the school from Iowa was a ranked team last year). Final score local guys 31, Iowa boys 7.

And it wasnt even that competetive, either.

No admission fee- they were asking for donations to the Red Cross for hurricane Katrina relief.

No prob- what the usual admission fee ended up in their jugs.

We bought a program (to figure out if we knew any of the players), a couple of Pepsis, an order of nachos, a brat and a hot dog, and we were out all of $20.

Couldnt hardly pay for parking for an Illini game for that amount.

Oh yeah- the Illini were down 27-7 at the start of the 4th quarter, and somehow found a way to win their game in overtime, too.

Maybe this season wont be as sorry as the last few have been

Sunday?

Took the Hillbilly boat to N.P.P. Lake. Spent about 2 hours trying to find SOMETHING to hit our lines.

Without success.

I should have figured out how our day in the boat was going to go after the first 10 minutes.

Why?

Because after I parked the truck, walked down to the ramp, climbed in, moved the boat to the ramp to pick Lease up, and then

The trolling motor hit bottom. No biggie- it wasnt even turned on.

But

Hitting the concrete of the ramp caused of the blade to snap off.

Completely.

Which meant

We could move around and all, butthe motor was hopping all over the place, vibrating my right hand and arm into numbness.

Not good.

That, and there was no wind at all (the dreaded rippled mirror effect), which put the fish into slumber.

We figured out quickly that the boat wasnt the way to go. So we loaded it up, headed to the local Wallyworld, bought a bag of ice, case of diet Pepsi (product placement ought to be worth a coupon at least, right?), a bag of catfish stink bait, and headed back to the bridge where we have caught a few decent channel cats over the past year or so.

The goal was to take the rest of the day easy (goal achieved) and catch a few fish (very few, it turned out- only one catfish, plus a mirror carp and a couple dozen bluegills).

Because the area around the bridge is no boats allowed (due to the nuclear power plant), that meant we didnt have to deal with jet skis (thank you very much) and oversized motor boats (penis substitutes, in other words).

So yes, even thought the fish werent cooperating, we still had a very nice relaxing day.

Today?

A little shopping (much needed).

A little yard work (ditto).

And no real work to be found.

We have to make it through another (short- only 4 days) work week, and then our once a year out-of-town vacation begins.

Our hotel room is still reserved (I checked, because of Katrina), and even though we are planning a bargain vacation, it should be a good time for the both of us

Garden news:

My tomato plants look like Hell. The extremely hot weather in July/early August has now left my plants in sad shape.

I have put up plenty of hot and mild salsa, and taco sauce, but I have only made one batch of pasta sauce. As bad as the plants look now, a second stock pot full is looking unlikely.

I dumped a bunch of Miracle Grow onto the sad remains of my plants this afternoon. If things go well, I will have one last rush of fruit before a frost.

If not? Classico makes a decent bottled sauce.

And their jars are Mason, meaning I get a meal and a free glass canning jar to use later.

Better than nothing, I guess
