Today's music?

Wood - "Songs from Stamford Hill" (1999 - Sony Music) - reminds me of early Eagles music, sung by an Englishman...

A colorful caterpillarplus- better stock up on the sweet stuff, if you wanna save a few bucks

Lease found this 1 long caterpillar crawling along the shoreline while we were fishing on Monday. Since it was about to slip into the lake, she picked it up with a stick to return it safely back into the weeds.

Before she did, I set the Minolta on macro, and shot a few photos of it:

Maybe it survived the return to solid ground?

One more quick bit of consumer news, courtesy of your old pal Roadiepig:

I read in the paper today that gasoline isnt the only commodity that has been adversely affected by this summers odd weather.

When you combine the upper Midwest draught (and subsequent near-failure of the sugar beet crop), combined with the hurricanes damage to both the Louisiana sugar cane crop and processing, and the following has happened:

Since mid-July, the futures (wholesale) price of processed sugar has gone from about 23 per pound to close yesterday at over .50!

Which means

The 4 pound bag of granulated sugar that cost you about $2 back in mid-summer will soon cost you about $4. The situation is so bad that the government just released some of its strategic stockpile (yes, they keep these for more than just crude oil)to try to keep the price from rising much more.

So

If you plan on doing any big baking for the holidays (like Lease always does), you better try to find a decent price on bags of the sweet stuff NOW, and stockpile what you think you will need.

For my part? I stopped at local Big Lots on the way home tonight, and bought the last 9 4-pound bags of pure cane sugar (at their close-out price of $1.49 per bag) from their shelves.

Thats right- I bought 36 pounds of sugar at less than the present wholesale price.

How far will that go for us?

Depends how much Lease decides to bake this year.

I think she went through around 50 pounds last holiday season.

Better look for a few more bags on sale somewhere this weekend
