I still cant believe it!

The Chicago White Sox are the champions of Major League Baseball!

Being a long-time fan of both (usually) pathetic Windy City baseball squads, I didnt think I would ever say that last sentence.

But I did, several times today, to friends and co-workers who really dont care about the series, nor understand why their winning made me (and Codeman, who watched the last few innings of game 4 with me last night) so happy.

Beings that most of them are St. Louis Cardinals fans, they have spent their whole lives watching their team at least compete in the playoffs every few years, even if they havent won a series since 1982.

At least they are used to this.

But us White Sox fans?

3 playoff appearances in my 44 years on this planet. All three series were lost in the first round. Never even came close the championship round any of those times. So this is all new territory to us.

And now?

11-1 in the post season. One of only 3 teams in the 101 years of major League baseball to lead their division from day one to the end of the season, and then sweep the World Series.

Thats pretty impressive.

This team is truly that- a team. The only player on their roster who might make the Hall of Fame down the road is Frank Thomas, who spent all but a few weeks of this season on the disabled list. They had the strongest pitching staff in all of baseball (4 complete games in the ALCS? Even 1 is considered pretty impressive nowadays). Just about every batter in the starting lineup had a game winning or changing hit somewhere over the last few weeks. The leadoff hitter, who didnt hit a single home run during the regular season, hit 2 this post season (including Sundays game 2, walk-off , bottom of the ninth inning blast through the rain).

Even their (very) slow starting catcher, A.J. Pierzynski's (boy, does that name make my spellchecker confused!), who didnt have a single stolen base in the regular season, stole two of them in the playoffs.

And that doesnt count the steal of first base after the catcher dropped the third strike in game 2 of the ALCS (if you watch any television, you have seen this play at least a few time by now ;).

John Kass, the great page 2 columnist for the Chicago Tribune, is about the biggest White Sox fan in the Windy City, so he has especially enjoyed the ride all summer.

Today, he wrote what has to be the best recap of what this season means to a south-sider (aka the home of the White Sox), and what made this a great team
