Aunt Marge...plus-photos of last weekend's snowstorm

My fathers sister (and my aunt) Marge passed away yesterday. She was 81 years old.

This has had an unusual effect on me- I dont have many memories of Marge. She was my dads older sister, and she was somewhat distant. She married back in he early twenties, divorced before she reached her 30s.

She had two children from her one marriage- my cousins Mike (who also passed away a short while back) and Marcia. The last time I was in the same room as Marcia was in the late 60s.

In the last 30 years, I might have spent an hour or so with my aunt. Does this reflect poorly on me? I hope not.

My Dad was raised by an abusive alcoholic father and his long-suffering wife. I never met my grandmother- she died from colon cancer in the early 1950s, way before I was born. My Dad had nothing to do with his father from the time I was born until he was on his deathbed in 1969.

Needless to say- I met him once and have no memories of him whatsoever.

When children are raised in troubled households, they end up one of two ways- very close or distant.

In my Dads case, each child ended up as an island. All 4 (three brothers and one sister) made their way through life in good fashion. All were good parents (especially my Dad), all worked hard at their chosen professions, and all lived long lives.

They just werent very close to each other, or to anyone else in the family.

So her passing, although sad, doesnt really affect me that much.

Except in one way- she was the last of my Dads living siblings.

That means he is the last one still alive.

I will be keeping a very close eye on him for the next few weeks. I think the fact that he is the last of his siblings still alive is freaking him out just a little bit.

The funeral is Monday. I am already off for Presidents day. Lease called her boss, and he is giving her bereavement time off, too.

My Dad was the one who ended up with a sense of humor about life. His brothers and sister were all a little formal, and didnt seem to find much enjoyment in daily life. For this reason, I think my Dad will be able to get through this hurdle ok.

All of us will be here for him, no matter

About ready to sit down with Lease to watch The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Starz On-Demand.

I didnt read this classic stoners book until about 2 years ago. I reread several passages twice, just to try to understand what I had just read.

If the mo vie is as trippy as the book, I imagine the pause button will be hit a few times to go back over sections. Lease hasnt read the book, so it will be even odder to her.

Ill leave you with a couple of photos from last weekends freak snowstorm.

This one was taken inside of the greenhouse where the orchid show was taking place. Lease and a few of the plants for sale are in the foreground (we didnt buy any- with the luck I have had in the past, I didnt want to condemn another to death, not withstanding the one who bloomed here last week after staying dormant for 4 full years).

The carillon (bell tower connected to a huge keyboard/organ) in the park where the greenhouse is located. The parking lot here was so full of fresh snow 9at least 6, all unplowed) , I could hardly drive the Vibe.

One last shot:

Lease pointed this snow-covered tree out to me, telling me she thought it would make a good photographic subject.

I think she was right.
