George Mason? Isnt he that funny old Jewish comedian?

No wait- thats Jackie Mason, isnt it?

George Mason run this NCAA tourney is one of the reasons why I love college basketball, even during the years when my Illini underachieve (such as this one). Get hot at the right time, and you can knock off 3 of the elite programs in the nation (North Carolina, Michigan State , and Connecticut have won 4 of the last 6 national championships!) in one post season.

The selfless, team oriented ball that this squad plays is a joy to watch. No All-Americans on this squad.

But they keep winning.

Next up is another powerhouse, Florida, and their 7 center Joakim Noah (son of former tennis star Yannick). Lease said he is pretty, which I dont think most men would take as a compliment (his mom was Miss Sweden in her day, so).

Do I think they will win it all?

Not likely.

But they made it to the final Four. Beat the teams from those great schools, too.

Why not?

Patriots all the way (although LSU winning would also be cool, considering all the folks in southern Louisiana have been through the past year.)

Texas already won the college football national championship, so no sense in hogging both titles. And Florida is coached by one of the slimmest young coaches (Billy Donovan, with his slicked back hair) in the nation.

Just my opinions- feel free to disagree with me.

A coworker called my last Thursday, asking me if there was any way I could scan some old photographs he found in a relatives attic. He said they were kinda small, and he didnt even know who the subjects were in the photos.

Sure- bring them in. I could always try my best if they werent worth saving.

Little did I know

Sorry about that- I should have warned you about that sour puss before posting it in this entry.

The photos are REALLY old- all are Tintypes, a photographic process that was popular from around 1860 to the turn of the 20th century. By the clothing these subjects are wearing, it would put them closer to 1860 than the later dates. The next one might be wearing a Union jacket from the Civil War (cant tell for sure, though):

Both of these photographs are mounted in what was known as a Union frame. The case opens up to one of two photographs, is made from a very early version of what became plastics, and is held shut by a ting hook clasp. Pretty cool piece of history (and goes for about $50 and up in good shape on Ebay, even without photos!).

There are also 5 newer photos. These arent mounted in frames, so the undeveloped sides are exposed. According to what I could find on the Internet, the chocolate brown coloring of tintype photography was from the chemicals the metal (not actually tin- just a cheaper form of metal than the silver some other early photographs were made of) was treated with to cause the image to develop.

The things women used to do to themselves in the name of beauty. This had to be painful:

What they are, in other words, are a very early version of a Polaroid picture. You got the image right out of the camera (no negatives), they were quickly made, and inexpensive (compaired to the other types of photography available back in the 1800s). Tintype photography made it possible for almost anyone to have their picture taken for posterity. Not just the high society.

And that is why, 140+ years later, I had the privilege to scan and clean up these photographs for my coworker.
