Only one more day...plus- more bat-proofing, and a link to a powerful slide show you really should see.

Until my boy turns 21 years old, that is.

Hard for me to believe. I guess I really am getting old.

A large gathering is expected tomorrow evening at the Southwestern restaurant that Lease once worked at, when Codeman was much younger. They won't reserve the big meeting room for us since it is Friday.

They told me to call about 1 hour before we arrive, and they would "see what they could do"

If 25+ people are willing to show up at your restaurant at one time, you better damn well make room for them.

Can't expect them to push 10 tables together for us on their busiest night of the week. But they can at least hold a large area of the meeting room for us, if we get there early enough, dont you think?

If they don't?

I know one former employee of the place who might be a little bit angry.

Her husband, too...

Did a little "bat proofing" after work tonight. That, along with helping Lease get the house (and our stinky dogs) ready for the "after party" tomorrow night.

Went through a full roll of duct tape, sealing the whole house fan with Visquene and making sure that the screen windows were firmly in place and sealed at the seems.

Saw about 8-10 bats flying around at dusk tonight. None seemed to be coming out of any portion of my house, which is a good thing. I shot the garden hose up into the crevices around the chimney (where the bats roosted last summer), but nothing came out. I take that as a good sign.

Don't mind if they live in the neighborhood. Just don't want to get "up close and personal" with them.

Mainly because the bats life expectancy is around 5 minutes once I notice their presence INSIDE of my home....

An Internet must-see site... National Geographics slide show to go with this months article about Chernobyl, 20 years later:

Click on the header for "Sights and Sound- Chernobyl", and watch this compelling slide show about the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster, 30 years later.

Forgotten by most of the west, but a daily fact of life for the over 50,000 people who lived in the immediate fallout zone.

What is really amazing is how well nature has adapted to the damage. The village of Pripyat (built to house the workers of the power plant before the explosion) has been almost completely taken back by plant growth. I remember seeing another photo essay by a private citizen a couple of years back showing just how much the trees and other plants had grown , covering apartment buildings and school houses.

The Geographic article covers that same territory, plus shows the damage done to the citizens of the Ukraine and Belarus.

Well worth the few minutes it takes for the slide show to play out on your computer.

Go on- click here and view it now.
