Goodbye, you crazy bastard!...plus- a full weekend (with photos)

Well this sure sucks.

As many crazy things as Steve Erwin( The Crocodile Hunter, if you didnt know) did in his life, to die by having a freak accident (stingray stinger piercing his heart) seems anticlimactic.

Sad, any way you look at it. The man lived his life to the fullest, and died doing the thing he loved.

Lease said ,When its your time, its your time.

I guess it was, for him.

Friday night- Lease and I gave the catfish one more try. Its getting late in the year, so I didnt expect great results.

But the weather has been so great (highs every day in the mid 709s), we had to take a chance.

We fished the bridge where I left my tackle pouch and camera back in June for the first time since that day, and had plenty of bites. Only problem was, with the exception of one 3 pound channel cat, all the fish were very small.

Lease landed at least 20 decent bluegills, but she wasnt trying to catch them. She had on a large baitholder hook and chicken livers most of the time, but the gills are so used to eating livers they kept getting hooked on her line. I was using both stink bait (Bee Jays brand0 and livers on the bottom, and rarely went more than a few minutes without a bite.

I caught so many 6 to 10 Brown Bullhead catfish (a tiny relative to the Channel Cats) that I decided to keep a few for a meal. I ended up with 8 of them to go with the single keeper Channel Cat (I did throw back 5 small Cannel, to grow for another day) by the time it was too dark to see.

They ended up in my cast iron skillet last night, blackened Cajun style. Yes, the Bullhead filets were small (each about the size of a typical Bluegill filet). But they tasted every bit as good as the Channel Cat.

As many times as these little catfish spiked my hands Friday night, eating a few was a decent way to get a little bit of payback.

Saturday- Nephew J-Rod and I attended the Illini football game. He received 2 free tickets to the event because he served in the military in the Iraq war.

Pretty cool freebie, and nice that he chose me to use the extra seat.

They won easily, beating up on the division 1-AA school down the road in Charleston. If they hadnt won, the second year coach of the team would have been ridden out of town on a rail.

(I guess that old saying doesnt work anymore, with rail service a thing of the past. Oh well- fans would have been mad at him, anyway you put it).

Here is a self portrait I took during the game:

As usual, the people behind us dont seem too happy having their photo taken (especially to man on the left).

Too bad.

One of 6 Illini touchdowns on the day, all scored on the ground:

At halftime, the school had a presentation celebrating what the men and women who serve in our branches of the military have done protecting our country. Hate the war in Iraq if you want to, but dont take away from the sacrifices these people make for us every day:

We were given these red white and blue pom poms at the hospitality tent that the school set up for the veterans before the game (free bbq, brats and other food and beer- another nice benefit of being J-Rods guest), and they told us to wave them when the halftime tribute was going on.

Nice to see so many veterans waving the pom poms, and getting a nice hand from the rest of the crowd.

Getting ready to have the family over for a simple cookout. Hots and Brats are on the menu, along with a few hamburgers.

Its hard getting my dad and my sisters families over for one of these, so we took the initiative this time and set it up for our house.

We have to go back to work tomorrow for a 4-day work week.

After that?

Lease and I are headed out for our yearly vacation.

Its gonna be a long 4 workdays..
