Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006 - 9:28 p.m. A break from the ice storm photos.... This amaryllis picked the day of the ice storm to bloom (click on full sized images- the details really come through that way). I usually just buy the $4.99 bargain amaryllis kits at the local hardware store- they always send up at least a stalk with colorful red/white/or apple blossom blooms. Nothing spectacular, but a nice addition to Lease's holiday decorating. This year, along with the usual bargain bulbs (those haven't bloomed yet, but should in the next couple of weeks), I went a little bit crazy and bought the bulb that produced these blooms from the local greenhouse. The bulb has already had two stalks (with 3 blooms each twice the size of the bargain bulb) rise up and fade. There is still one more stalk , growing taller than either of the first two, ready to pop open later this week. The last stalk must be at least 3' tall. And the actual flowers? They aren't shaped like the typical amaryllis. The petals are more irregular, with tattered edges. The colors are odd, too- red striped with cream, with green highlights mixed in. The thing cost quite a bit more than the hardware store varieties, but its different enough to (maybe) make it worth it. I usually treat these as disposables- one Christmas of blooms, then into the compost pile. they aren't the easiest to get to bloom a second time the following year. This one will be worth a try, anyway....
