Ice storm #2, Day 1...

The burn pile at mid-day Friday. A steady rain damped the flames somewhat, but with that much fuel and built up heat, rain wasn't going to put the fire out.

Round one of the present ice storm wasn't much trouble- we were called in at 10:20 pm because the roads in the county to our west were becoming icy. The temperature at that time was 34.

by 3 am, the temp had dropped to 33 with ice forming on the branches of the trees on the north end of my route. The bridge decks were still just wet, but I treated them every couple of hours with salt anyway.

By 5 am, the temperature had risen to 34. We all returned to the storage, dumped and fueled the trucks, and were able to go home at 7 am without calling in anyone from the day shift.

Its now 3 pm, and nobody from the day shift was ever called in today. That means I am now on call. The mercury is currently reading 37, with a steady mist/fog. The weather prognosticators are still calling for more freezing rain tonight. Less than they were before, but any rain at below freezing will get me called back in again tonight.

Tomorrow's forecast is for more freezing rain after noon, followed by a mix of rain, sleet, and snow into midday Monday.

The overtime would be nice, but not if it means people will be loosing their power and heat again....
