Tomato plants growing in WHAT?

Another volunteer plant, this tomato sprouted and grew in a very odd place- the rock pit I built for runoff from our patio. Years of rinsing dog deposits (urine, in other words) had made the area at the edge of the patio barren. No amount of cultivating and soil removal could get grass to grow in this area, so I gave up. I dug about 6 inches of soil out and put it in the compost pile, and then added the same amount of river stone in its place. So that means there isn't any soil close to the surface.

Volunteer tomatoes sprout up in add places all the time here- bound to happen when you are intentionally growing 50 or so plants in the garden beds. I usually just pull up the odd wild tomato, but I decided to give these a chance considering how much they went through just to grow.

I pulled one of the plants this weekend- it was growing large, but hadn't produced any tomatoes. This happens when the seed sprouts from a hybrid plant sometimes- the new plant goes back to one of the parent plants. Sometimes that's a good thing, others you end up was a stubby plant that doesn't produce.

But the other one? It is covered with golf ball-sized fruit, born in clusters of 5-8 fruits each, over the entire plant. A few are just starting to show color- if they end up tasting good, I might have to save some of it's seeds for next year's garden....
