Death to the American auto industry? Not so fast...

Our new car- a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu LT. This photo is taken for our local dealer's web site , from the actual listing they have up for our particular car, vin number and all.

Why did we buy a new car, with only a couple of payments left on our still-fine Pontiac Vibe? With the Big 3 American automakers apparently going down the tubes as I type this?

Well...it's complicated.

We wanted to help our son and daughter-in-law out by giving them our 2004 Pontiac (actually, it's a Toyota with Pontiac skins wrapped around it, but that never bothered us). Cody traded in his 2000 Ford Ranger pickup (which was on its last legs) for us on the Malibu, which caused the dealership a bunch of pains to process (we "traded in" our Vibe to the dealer for $1, they in turn sold it to our son for that same $1. Just to process the paperwork with the state, and to pay of the $900 we still owed on the Vibe to a bank in upstate New York).

So we really wanted to get our son out of his (quickly becoming unsafe) Ranger and into a safe vehicle for their newborn daughter (they also have a newer Mazda 3, so they weren't in terrible shape- just limited in what they could use to haul our Granddaughter around).

But more so- we wanted to buy a car that is not just American made (except for the 6 speed transmission, which for some odd reason comes from Korea?), but a very well made, Consumer Reports recommended, Motor Trend Magazine domestic car of the year award winning car. One that looks pretty damn good and handles and rides like a dream, too.

So as the media keeps writing about the death of the domestic auto industry here in America, we our doing what we can to raise our middle fingers towards that prospect.

I just hope more people can do what they are able to to show that the prediction of the death of US auto industry is premature...
