The calm before the storm, or how we spent the last day of our mini-vacation

Lease told me all last week that she really wanted to go fishing, so that is what we did. Beings that it was just in the low 40s for high last week, the conditions are far from idea. That, and the fact that the Army Corps of Engineers (who control the dam) have allowed an unbelievable amount of water over the gates since Januarys flooding, and you dont have much of a chance of catching fish.

We caught a few bluegills and a spare crappie or two, but thats about it. I did have a large fish hooked for about 2 seconds, but it wasnt hooked properly and got away. I think it was a carp, but have no way of knowing for sure.

After setting record water levels lass the 10 weeks ago, the lake is now as low as I can ever remember seeing it this late in the year. Since we brought the Minolta with us today, I have a few shots to show you how low is low:

This first one was taken at the beach at Wilber Creek, the location where I caught so many White Bass last fall. I was standing at the waters edge, facing the beach house at the top of the photograph. All of the shoreline where I waded last fall is well out of the water. If I had tried standing at this spot last October, the water would have been up to my nose.

Ditto for this one. It was shot at the Big Bridge. The area in the foreground is where most of the larger Whites came in to feed on Shad, and made the mistake of hitting my spinners instead. If you look to the right, you can see a small embankment, marking where the high water mark was reached this January.

What a difference a few weeks make!

One last shot of the sandbars offshore of the bridge:

That sandbar is about 5 feet above the waters surface. It wasnt visible at all last summer and fall, but I did run aground on it with the Hillbilly boat one afternoon last August. With only a trolling motor to propel the boat, getting off wasnt much fun at all

One last item about tonights NCAA championship game:

The prima Donna McDonalds High School All-American basketball players for the bad guys (that would be North Carolina) can take credit for my team (the good guys- University of Illinois) getting the chance to hire their present coach, Bruce Weber.

Hows that, you might ask?

Simple- they wanted to play for North Carolina, but didnt like the hard-nosed man who was coaching the team during their freshman season (Matt Doherty, a fine man who just wouldnt allow the young stars free run of the program).

Soafter that one season, they started telling anyone who would listen that their coach couldnt relate to them, and they would never win as long as he was around. I think a few tossed around the idea of transferring out of Carolina. Since the fans of the Tarheels had been spoiled by having a Hall of Fame coach (Dean Smith) for something like 30 years before Doherty became the leader of the team (and after one of Smiths assistants ran the school on autopilot for a few years after Smiths retirement). They were glad to run him out of town, even though he brought these players to their school.

Like I said- they wanted a new coach. The school fired Doherty, and they lured Kansass headman, Roy Williams, away from Lawrence.

Kansas, needing a new head coach, went afterBill Self, who was the leader ofIllinois. Self took the Kansas offer, saying it was his dream job.

That left my team without a leader. Searching in state, they convinced the head coach of Southern Illinois- Carbondale, Bruce Weber, to move up to Champaign.

The rest (as they say) is history.

So thank you, self-centered young men of North Carolina basketball. By your NBA-player-like behavior, my squad landed one of the finest coaches in America. Have you noticed he has swept all of "coach of the year" honors this season?

Not bragging or anything- I still think you are the best basketball players in college today.

I just hope my squad continues to play the best team ball for one more night
