Saturday, Feb. 08, 2003 - 7:49 p.m.

A fine Saturday, with photos ( probably too many, I have to say).

No time to tell you all about today. Lease and I took the short trip to Springpatch again, this time for a tour of a famous house and an orchid show.

Yeah, we do enjoy old person things.

We have hit this orchid show every year for at least a decade. I used to always buy an orchid as we left, but I have such bad luck with these touchy plants. I have just decided I dont have the proper growing environment to have much success with them, and dont buy them any more. I still have three sad looking specimens in a west-facing window, but the odds of any of them ever blooming again are very poor.

I took something like 120 pictures between the two sites today, and will post some of them as I get them edited. For now, I will leave you with a few more of the photos I took in downtown Mohall Thursday.

This is a statue that has been located in our central park for over 100 years. It was put there to commemorate the civil war veterans, as they were entering their twilight years. The date inscribed at the base of the statue is 1901, and it appears to be cast of bronze.

There was talk a few years back of trying to fix this poor thing. Years of rain and other weather have taken their toll on the statue. All of the small dark areas in this photo are pits in the surface. If it continues to rot at the rate it has been, there wont be much left of it in a decade or two. Hopefully by then some organization or such will have put together the means to repair this symbol of our town:

This is the other landmark that our city is known for, the transfer house. It is the original bus/ train depot building, and used to sit smack in the middle of what is now a state highway. As times changed and the need for this building left, the city jacked it, mounted it onto wheels, and using a semi-tractor, moved it several blocks to resituate it on the edge of our central park:

A couple of years back, the city decided to remove this transfer house from our city seal. They replaced it with something that look very much like the Japanese Rising Sun artwork from the WWII-era. Needless to say, that caused a major uproar here in Mohall. It was only a short time before the old symbol started showing back up on official documents.

Dont mess with something that works

This last shot is somewhat an optical illusion.

Several years back, the owner of this building in the historic district decided to make the south-facing wall of his building match the other three sides. Those other sides have casement windows made of metal that sit out about 4 feet from the faade of the brick, adding space to the upper floors.

The owner didnt have somebody bust out the old brick walls and add casement windows to the bare side. Instead, he paid a artist to paint windows onto the brick. This artist did a very fine job, matching the colors and trim work to the faded metal of the windows on the other sides of the building. If you just glance at this building, you might not even notice the trickery:

If you look very close, you might even see the contented cat, lounging in the lower left-hand window

Lease just told me that the movie we want to see (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back yeah, we are a little behind times, movie-wise) is about to start, so I am out of here.

I hope to have some very colorful photos up here tomorrow..
