No surprises, except how the boy pitchedPlus- whats that smell? ..

Yeah, the team from the suburbs beat us tonight.

Not as badly as I expected, but they won none the less.

They started their ace pitcher, because he needed the work. Since they only had 2 games last week (as opposed to our 6), he hadnt had any work since last Monday.

I think the idea was to beat us badly, so we would be intimidated in the first round playoff game a week from Saturday.

I dont think it worked, though.

Why?

Because we started the game with our #4 starting pitched, Z. He didnt pitch badly, but the defense behind him let him down several times. By the time he left the game after 4 innings, we were down 5-0. I think 2 of the runs might have been earned.

For some bizarre reason, Weebles then tossed Travo to the mound, even though his arm has been causing him so much pain he was having it treated by the trainer.

Another example of why Weebles is so popular with the parents. His dad was spitting nails when he saw Travo head out to the mound.

He couldnt get a curve ball to drop into the strike zone. His fastball was decent, but his curve is his best pitch (when it works). He managed to get out of the inning with only one run scored, even though they had the bases loaded with only one out.

So the score was now 6-0, and he had only one option left:

Yupjust like a few weeks ago, Weebles threw Codeman to the lions.

Or, it this case, the team with 4 batters hitting over .400 (which is very good).

Thanks again, for giving him a chance to pitch against only the very best competition, Coach!

In his first inning of work, he got the first two batters to hit high fly balls for easy outs. He then walked the next two batters, including the son of my co-worker (Rabbit):

Considering the fact that Rabbits boy had already gone 3-3, with two doubles, walking him wasnt a bad idea.

The next man up was the other teams clean-up hitter. That means he is the one the look to for power hitting, extra base hits.

He hit the first pitch to our second baseman for an easy out.

One inning down, no damage done.

We went down weakly in the bottom of the 7th, and Codeman returned to the mound.

He sat the first batter down with a ground out to the shortstop. The next batter hit a dinker into shallow right field for their first hit against him.

Even though they were ahead of us 6-0, and their pitcher was throwing a 2-hitter, they decided to run on the boy. He does have a slow, deliberate release to the plate, so I wasnt surprised.

Neither was Jordon, our catcher. He threw the runner out by 5 feet as he slid into second.

After that, the next batter flied out to end the inning.

So, against one of the best hitting teams we face all season, this was Codemans pitching line:

2 innings pitched. No runs scored (no earned runs). One hit, 2 walks, two men left on base.

I was very happy for him. Yes, he throws the ball much slower than the ace of our staff. But that doesnt matter, if you can keep the other guys offbeat trying to slow down for your pitches. It wouldnt work for a full game, but Weebles really should have thrown him out there more this season.

He couldnt have done any worse than some of his 'pets' did.

Lesson #1 learned by Roadiepig today: Remove all of your smoke detectors batteries BEFORE you use the self-cleaning feature on your oven.

I have never had a self-cleaner before, so this is new to me. Since we cant mount a ventilation fan above the stove (there is a window in the way), the smoke just billowed throughout the house, setting off all of our upstairs detectors.

There has to be an easier way.

Why was I using this on a weekday?

I was moving a Tombstone pizza on the wire rack, and it slipped from my hands, falling face first on the bottom of the oven.

Yum!

It, of course, immediately bonded with the metal of the lower oven, necessitating the use of the self-cleaning feature.

The whole house still smells like burnt pizza toppings.

Not an attractive scent.
