Two hours, fifty-three minutes of baseball is just too muchplus- dont spill your diesel. The local bus drivers will get VERY ANGRY

Tonights game featured the cross-town team in our yearly home and away double header. Tonight was supposed to be the other teams home game, but they dont have a home field this year. The one nice diamond they had been playing on booted them for not helping in the upkeep, so they have been floating around, playing their home games wherever they can. They have even used our diamond a couple of times.

Including tonight.

Have I mentioned before that they suck? Big time?

I think their record is 6-21.

But when the two in-town public schools get together, records go out the window. Hell, they even beat Mac once last year, when we were rolling along towards the league title.

Todays game was close for about 2 innings.

After that? We pulled ahead by the score of 10-3 in the 4th inning. Since they were the home team, we batted first each inning. This matters, because we managed to pull ahead 13-3 in the top of the 6th inning.

All we had to do was hold them scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, and we were out of there. It was only 6:10, so the game was chugging along at the usual speed.

The Panthers (the other team, and my Alma Matter) found a way to score 3 runs in their half of the inning, making the score 13-6.

Also, making us play one more inning.

It was now 6:20, and the game was at the 2 hour, 20 minute mark.

One good thing happened it this point- Weebles finally decided to play the non-starters. Codeman was one of 4 who had spent the entire game on the bench.

He led off to start the inning, and worked the count to 3-2. He then hit a line drive to the left fielder on 1 hop, earning himself another single. He scored three batters later, coming home from third base on another single.

He wasnt through yet, though.

Mac managed to bat around, bring him back up to the plate with runners on first and third and two men out.

He faced a left-handed pitcher for only the second time this year (that is a disadvantage to a left-handed batter, FYI). On a 1-1 count, he nailed a inside fastball down the first base line for another base hit. The next batter grounded out, ending the LONG top of the 7th inning with the score now Mac 19, Panthers 6.

Mercifully, our pitcher put the Panthers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th. Game finally over at 6:53 pm.

This, exactly one week after our team played a one hour, 19 minute game!

Tomorrow, we face the snooty suburban team to the east. They play smaller schools, and have a better record than us. We also have to face them in the first game of the state playoffs a week from Saturday, so I dont expect either team to pitch any of their regular hurlers.

That means Codeman might have to face a team with 4 guys batting over .400 (according to this mornings paper).

Joy!

One last thing- one of the parents for the other guys stooped the game twice , yelling at our players to shut up in the dugout, and at a couple of high school kids cheering from our bleachers. I dont think either group did anything over-the-line during the game, but he was offended none the less.

I think his son was their catcher late in the game, and made numerous errors. He might have though that our kids were making fun of him, but I can assure you that wasnt the case. They were just enjoying a victory, and being high school kids at the same time.

Believe me- if I thought what they were saying was wrong I would have been the first to tell them to settle down. I think yall know how I feel about that kinda crap..

Yesterday at work, we had a truck snap a brake line. In order to get it back to the yard, we sent a couple of men with our big trailer to where it was sitting alongside the road.

As they were driving it up the ramps onto the trailer, the trucks weight shifted, causing the right set of wheels to slip off of the ramp. This caused the undercarriage of the truck to rake against the side of the trailer. In the process, the tie rods were badly bent, and the cross-over line for the fuel tanks was punctured.

Where the fuck am I going with this story, you are yelling at your monitor right now, right?

Simple- the managed to get it loaded up the second time, and hauled it into the storage. Since the fuel tanks werent too full to start with, they didnt think the amount of diesel spilled on the shoulder was a major problem. They reported the spill to Beavis, and he thought the same. It would evaporate before anybody had any problem with the mess.

Wrong.

I received a phone call at 8 am this morning from an irate citizen, asking me what do we plan to do with the major oil spill we left on the shoulder?

I didnt know about the fuel line cut and spill, so I told the man that it was just brake fluid and shouldnt be a problem.

Big mistake.

Remember- this was 8 am, hour into my workday.

His response?

I THINK I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAKE FLUID AND DIESEL FUEL! YOU LEFT A MAJOR MESS DOWN HERE, AND I AINT GOONA LET YOU GET AWAY WITH IT! LET ME TALK TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMETHING!

For a minute there, I thought I had switched jobs with Lease!

I told him that I would make sure we would get this problem fixed as soon as possible. I asked him for his name and number, and told him I would have management call him right back (all were away in London for another cut your budgets meeting).

By the time all was said and done, he was happy. We called the environmental waste clean-up pros in town, and they removed what little was left of the fuel, and then removed a layer of soil they determined was contaminated. They left everything squeaky clean and like brand new, except for the lack if grass. Probably will set the state of North Dakota back around $1-$2 thousand dollars

All because 10 gallons or so of diesel fuel spilled onto the shoulder, and a school bus driver didnt like the smell when he passed the area that morning. He knew it was our mess, because he passed the truck with his bus yesterday afternoon.

Such is life at the NDDOT..

One last thing- while I was away on vacation, management appointed one of our long-timers to the temporary Mohall #2 position.

Against his will.

He is a good choice, because he doesnt have any grudges to take action against, and has no aspirations of being the Big Boss .

Things have been very quite (office-wise) so far this week.

I hope they stay that way..
