A strange email correspondence with a seller on eBay.plus- a link to a silly holiday song/web page

I have never cut and pasted an email exchange on this journal page of mine, but this one is just too strange to not pass on.

Ill set it up for you first: I placed a bid a couple of days ago for an actual Gold Record. The opening bid was a silly $9.99, so I couldnt pass it up.

What musician, you are wondering?

Extreme. For their million-selling album Pornograffiti.

Remember the power ballad More than Words? The pop-metal romp Hole Hearted? The special appearance by 70s blues rocker Pat Travers on the song Get the Funk Out?

Oh, you dont?

I liked the album when it came out, and still have the cd in my collection. To be able to buy a piece of history like this for less than the cost of a cd appealed enough to me to place a bid.

That, folks, is how eBay works. You bid. High bidder wins. Simple as that.

Well, not with this seller.

Here is the email exchange that we had over the last couple of days. The only thing I have changed is our names (to protect my innocence, and his stupidity). My emails are in italics. His are in bold:

Hi there. I see that you are bidding on my Extreme award. Cool. Want to let you know that I will not take anything less than $100.00 for it though. Would you be interested in that amount? Let me know.....thanks D.S.

Hum- what is wrong with picture? You put an item up for sale on eBay, you better set the opening bid low enough to get the least you want for it, right? After reading his email, I decided I didnt want to try to deal with this individual. So I sent him the following

D.S.,

I can't say I have ever had this problem before on eBay! I have set a proxy bid that isn't nearly that high, and I figured someone would have outbid me by now anyway. No, I don't want it enough to pay $100 for it (even though I love the album), so unless someone outbids me my winning price won't be nearly that high.

I see from you feedback page that you have been a member of the eBay community for longer than I have, so I am wondering why you didn't list the plaque with a reserve price, or a high enough starting bid to discourage anyone from bidding too low for it? It seems like most of the high-end collectables like this start with at least an opening bid of $50, sometimes much higher.

If you want to kill the auction, I have no desire to leave you negative feedback. I can understand if you think it is worth far more than what it is now setting at, so I won't mind if you decided to stop the auction and relist it or something. For your own sake, do this as quickly as possible- if someone else bids on it (even if they don't get the high bid), they might be unwilling to let you do that without raising a fit with eBay.

Again, I won't care if to drop the auction. No negative feedback will be left by me...

(Roadypig at eBay)

I think I gave his several outs, and was more than generous for not holding him to the auction. Gave him the chance to dump the auction, with no retribution from me (even thought I would be justified, IMHO)

This is what he wrote back:

Yeah. I didn't set a higher price because I thought it would have multiple bids by now. What would you be willing to pay for it? $70.00? Maybe we can work something out where you could snag this nice piece. Lemme know.....thanks

D.S.

He is still not getting it, is he?

I tried one more time to let him off of the hook:

Hey again!

I don't know if sellers can see what someone's proxy bids is, but I will tell you that I had mine set at $20.99. Way below the amount this plaque is worth, but I put a bid up there just to see what would happen. This close to the holidays, I cant spend too much for something for myself, and I don't want to insult you by trying to get it for too little.

Are you going to stop the auction, if nobody else bids on it?

If there is some kind of fee to cancel an auction, I can see why you wouldn't want to do that. But , if nobody else bids on it the final price will still be $9.99 (but I imagine someone will snipe it on the last day, if it is still that low). Like I said before- if this auctions ends with me the winning bidder at too low of a price, I won't slam you in your feedback if you don't complete the sale (of course, that is as long as you don't leave negative feedback on me for not sending you the money and completing the sale for what you feel is too low a price!)

Roadiepig

How much clearer can I make this? I dont want the award enough to jack up my proxy bid to reach what he now thinks it is worth. His feedback rating is over 100, meaning he has been around long enough to know what a Reserve auction is, or to start the opening bid high enough to be satisfied.

Maybe not. Here is the last email, received today:

No..I wouldn't leave you negative feedback regardless. I can sell it for $50.00. But as low as I could go.

D.S.

No, dumbass- $9.99 is as low as you COULD go, if I wanted to press you on this issue.

But I wont. I figure the guy just dont understand how eBay works, regardless of how long he has been a registered user (1999), nor how many auctions he has been involved with.

Duuuuhhhhhhhhhh..

Saturday night, so I will leave you with a link (that I received from that great D-lander, Cosmicrayola:

I wear a paper hat

On fuck in the song, so dont yell at me if you are offended by the use of that word.

As far as that goes- why would you still be reading this, if you were offended by foul language?

Fuckin right, muthafuckers!
