Chief....

From last Saturday's Illinois vs. Eastern Illinois football game's halftime show:

To a (small) few, a racist mascot. Those few are making sure this symbol of the University of Illinois is retired. The NCAA decided that Illinois and a few other schools with Native American names as their symbols won't get to host any post season sportin g events until he is gone. Money talks.

This ban doesn't apply to all schools- Florida State still has a Seminols mascot ( performed by a student just like Illinois) ride a horse and throw a lit spear into the turf after a touchdown- but that's NOT racist, according to the NCAA? Oh yeah- the few Seminole Indians still left in Florida said they didn't mind the school using the mascot. There are no Illini Indians still alive, so they can't give us their opinion on the Chief....

To the vast majority of the citizens of this state, this is a revered symbol of the native Americans who once lived here. The original headdress and outfit was designed and given to an Illinois student for use as Chief Illinwek back in the 1930's.

Strange how politically correct we have become as a nation- if a few people decide they are offended by something, they can always cry foul and get there way. If they took the time to study the history of Chief Illiniwek and to find out what this symbol stands for, maybe they would understand why he became the symbol for this fine institution....
