Open letter to Mr. Bill Self (former mens head basketball coach, University of Illinois, presently same for Kansas University)

Note- this was originally written this afternoon. Since D-land was dead then, I couldnt post it until now. That's why the time listed above doesn't match the time on the clock. With the results of todays game (Illinois 71, Nevada 59), the following is even more to the point

Dear Mr. Self,

Hows that new job working out?

The boys you recruited and then left behind when the pasture looked greener over in Lawrence are about ready to play their second round game in the NCAA tournament in Indianapolis. You remember them, dont you?

A big raise can make about any place look better than where you are at, cant it? And the fact that former Kansas coach Roy Williams left you with 3 future NBA players on your roster must have made it look even better. After all, the national sportswriters have been telling anyone who will listen that the Illini probably dont have a single 1st round draft pick on their team, and that you should get credit for their sucess (even though you haven't coached these players for over two years ). All they have done is win. 33 times now, with only one loss.

Hows your team doing?

Oh yeah, thats right- now I remember. Last night around 11 pm, CBS cut away to the last couple of minutes of your 1st round game against the 14th seeded team from Bucknell. I bet you had to get an atlas out to find out where their campus was located, didnt you?

Your team came into the tourney as a #3 seed. That meant they thought you had one of the 12 best teams on division 1 basketball, heading into these games. This, after getting as high as #2 in the polls back in January, before you started loosing here and there.

I noticed that when the final buzzer sounded, you had 1 less point than the Bucknell Bison did. That made your team the highest seeded team in the whole tournament to loose in the first round.

Bet that stung, didnt it?

I wonder how long the folks in Jayhawk country will take to get tired of your used-car salesman of a personality. After hopping from team to team to get your big paycheck (4 teams in less than 7 years!), you said this was your dream job, the only place you ever wanted to coach.

Bet that dream seems more like a nightmare right now

Your former fan,

Roadiepig

p.s.- GO ILLINI!

And no, I am not overly confident that my team will win the tourney. Im just hoping they play well enough to win today, after all the distractions they have been through the past couple of weeks.

Todays game is already turning my stomach. The team from Nevada made it to the sweet sixteen last year, and match up will against the Illini.

If the Illini play up to their potential (as they did against almost every team before Ohio State beat them), they will win.

I just dont know if they can do that anymore.

Ill leave you with a picture I took this morning of our great nephew KADEN:

Thats Leases hand, tickling his foot. He didnt want to smile for some reason, so his mom told us about that trick.

His dad should be home next week from his field training in the Army. After a short stay, he is off to Iraq.

Keep him in your thoughts, ok?
