This was a nice surprise.

U.S. Cellular has paid a bunch of money the past few years to have their name attached to the playing field that the Chicago White Sox compete on every summer, so I imagine they included the rights to show off the trophy in the odd chance that they actually won the World Series.

Which they did last fall, in case you didnt know.

So, U.S. Cellular has been taking the trophy all over the Midwest for the last 6 months. It even made it here to Mohall last January.

It snowed on that day. Naturally.

So I didn't get a chance to get up close and personal with it that day.

But...

While we were eating our Gyros at the ethnic village at the state fair last Saturday, I heard the following announcement over the loudspeakers:

The Chicago White Sox and U.S.Cellular are proud to announce that the 2005 World Series Trophy will be on display for the next 2 hours in the U.S. Cellular tent. The first 500 people who view the trophy and donate $10 per party to White Sox Charities can get their photo taken with the trophy, and receive an official World Series baseball!"

I had absolutely no idea that the trophy would be there on Saturday.

So- Codeman and I headed over to the tent, stood in line for about 46 minutes, and got several photos of the trophy.

I like this one the best, because it makes me look like (as I said before) a big dork....

The one thing about this event that ragged me off a bit?

The people who waited in the line with us, then strode up to the trophy and had a member of their party take their photo WITHOUT paying the teenage attendants the $10 fee.

Yes, they called it a donation

But the flyers they handed to us while in line said, A $10 donation to (blah) is required for each group having their photo taken with the trophy today.

You can quibble whether that is truly a donation- the point is they are doing it to raise funds for the community outreach program run by the players and their families through the ball club.

The same people who skipped out on the $10 fee probably walked over to the stage/beer garden next to the tent and paid $5 per 12 ounce the rest of the day.

Oh well- if they didnt pay the fee, they didnt get the cool facsimile ticket from the World Series that Codeman now has in his bedroom. And if you didnt have the ticket, you didnt get a ball, either.

We each were handed one as we left. Must have been tired of all the cheapskates who didnt pay, and decided to give us two for our ticket.

I think Ill put mine on my desk at work. Have to show all the St. Louis Cardinal fans at the storage what a World Series ball looks like, since they havent won the thing since 1982.

As for the few Cubs fans I work with?

I, too, am a Cubs fan. And it makes no sense to rub it in, since the Cubs are close to having the 100th anniversary of their last World Series win.

Sorry , Moose.
