They just weren't going to make it one more summer....

This photo shows a cross-cut of the stump from my peach tree, which didn't bounce back from the splitting it took in the ice storm of last December:

Here's the photo I took the day after the storm:

The broken section was removed right away, but the crack in the trunk was deep. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to be able to carry any load this summer, so I made the painful decision to cut it to the ground last week. I also removed the other peach tree, too. It had been dieing for several years, and hadn't produced enough fruit to keep the tree rats full for a while.

So, for the first time in 9 years or so, I won't be harvesting my own , home grown peaches this summer.

I do now have plenty of primo wood to chip, later to be used in my smoker. Peach wood is one of the best flavored woods you can find for this purpose.

Good thing there are so many orchards downstate that grow tasty peaches. We don't want to go a summer without fresh, tree ripened Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.....
