Monday, Sept. 02, 2002 - 7:47 p.m.

Labor Day? I didnt do much of that here.

Yes, for those living in the United States, today was the one day that we celebrate the worker, and what they have done to make this country what it is today.

So, to celebrate the day, almost everybody takes the day off.

Makes sense, right?

The majority of the rest of the world also has a holiday where they celebrate the worker. It is called May Day, and its celebrated in most of (what is left) of the socialist and communist countries of the world.

Since I am a member of the big, bad Teamsters union, I am one of the aforementioned American workers.

Stop laughing! Just because I get a check from the government, it doesnt mean I dont work.

Just not on a paid holiday, or on any Saturday or Sunday when there isnt any snow falling, or on the vacation and personal business days that my union has negotiated for my fellow workers and myself.

The other days of the year I wake up, throw on my work clothes, and take the 10 minute drive to the storage, where I spend the next 8 hours (minus the 30-minute unpaid lunch period, and the two 10 minute paid breaks) working.

As good a reason as any I can think of for celebrating today by staying home and grilling a sirloin steak on the grill, dont you think?

Sorry, the above was an attempt at humor.

I always seem to get myself into trouble when I try this here at D-land , but I really dont have much else to write about today, so

I did get a little yard work done today. Dumped a few 5-gallon buckets full of watered-down Miracle Grow on the tomato and pepper plants (probably the last time this summer for that), and I also harvested the rest of my Catawba grapes.

I have let these grapes stay on the vine for as long as possible, waiting to see at what point they start to dry up beyond usefulness. I picked enough to make grape jam back before we left on vacation, three weeks ago, and have been nibbling on a few whenever I was in the garden ever since.

Today I noticed that a few of the bunches had shriveled-up, dried former grapes on them. It was time to do something with the rest.

Since I already have a batch of jam on the shelves (p half-pints), and I still have to harvest some dark red, wine-type grapes grown by Bugs (from work) later this week, I settled on making the easiest thing you can make from grapes: grape juice!

I picked the grapes, culled all the dried hulls and leaves from the grape bunches, crushed what was left in my large stock pot (16 quart), added enough water to cover, and let them simmer for about an hour.

When I checked on them, they had changed color to a putrid shade of olive drab green. This meant two things: they were cooked and ready for straining through the wire sieve, and that I would have to add food color to make the juice look appetizing.

I ended up with 4 quarts of concentrated grape juice, to which I added 2 cups of sugar and about 10 drops of red food color. This made the juice very sweet, and changed its color to a nice shade of light pink.

I filled a plastic container with one half of the juice, and put the rest in a jumbo Ziploc bag and put it in the freezer.

I had some of the juice, mixed with lemonade, for supper tonight.

Its pretty tasty, even if it's color is a little odd

So, aside form the juice-making and throwing together supper tonight, I really didnt do much today.

I think I needed an actual day off, after all the home improvement time spent around the house last week.
